Four Weapon Competition - 7th February 2010

Well done to Tenterden 'A' for winning the event, with Maidstone coming a very good second.

Mallard Vets had a lot of fun but didn't really fence very well, being beaten by Mallard Juniors - will we ever live down the shame!

here are some photos from the event - sorry they're not all that great but I have a crummy camera phone!

We had a good turn out for this event. I have put in some videos - they have come out a bit scrappy but if you want, I do have higher resolution videos.

We've received a grant

We have just received a grant of Ł300 from the Kent Trust for Youth Sport, for which we are very grateful. We will be buying some smaller sabre weapons to allow our younger members to take up sabre. As part of the agreement, we will be having a press event in the near future.

Fencing exhibition at Herne Bay Memorial Park, 24th August

Good time this afternoon – after the rain had passed we had people queuing through to the close – we had to give group tasters in the end to stop them going home disappointed!  A big congratulations to Simon for organising both the Herne Bay and Canterbury exhibitions

10/8.2008

Fencing exhibition at Dane John Gardens, 10th August 2008

I have uploaded the photos taken at the exhibition. A nice day out, if a bit windy! Thank you to everyone for turning out and making the day so special. Hopefully we will have some new blood in the club as a result. I'm not sure the sabre jousting on bikes was an unqualified success - but good fun!

Here are the videos we took - some were a bit odd but they give a flavour of the day!

You can see that some of the videos are a bit strange - one I forgot i was recording, hence a good view of my feet! Can you tell that there was a Chinese influence in the background music?

Changes to the Constitution and Byelaws of the Club

There have been some minor changes to the Constitution and Byelaws of the Club.

Constitution section 3: 'The Club shall accept into membership any person from their Tenth birthday' has been changed to: 'The Club shall accept into membership any person from their Tenth birthday irrespective of race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other potentially discriminatory factors'

Byelaws section 6: The sentence 'Acceptance and refusal of any application for membership shall be at the absolute discretion of the Committee' has been removed

Social Membership is Changing

How clubs can apply for low cost social or recreational membership for club members.

Social Membership purpose and eligibility:
This membership category is intended for ‘starter’ groups or fencers who only wish to fence socially within their registered club.
Social Membership has changed. From April 1st 2008 fencers will now be issued with a social membership card and voucher. The voucher is for allowance to fence in one local competition and must be handed over to the competition organiser. All social membership cards/vouchers will be sent to the club secretary. Social membership is only available via Registered Clubs, however, you can also apply for social membership via the online membership facility (your card will be sent to the club secretary of your club).

Please note that for the purposes of social membership, a Club is defined as a group of individuals meeting at one venue only and only covers fencing within that venue. The Club must be an affiliated and paid-up member of the BFA.

The only membership benefit is solely to provide insurance cover for fencing within the nominated registered club and 1 local competition.
Social members have no right to “The Sword”, vote or receive any other benefits of British Fencing.

Application must be made by the Registered Club who should supply HQ with the details on the attached application form. Failure to provide all details will delay processing. Click here for membership form

Clubs will receive members cards/voucher as confirmation of insured fencers included under the policy. Insurance cover will only commence after the names and fees are received at HQ.

Downgrading for members in any other category is not permitted.

Clubmark

You probably all know that we are hoping achieve Clubmark standard this year. This has required a tremendous effort on the part of members of the committee and in particular by Jane. East Midlands region club were the first in England fencing to be awarded Clubmark but we hope to follow soon.

To take some words from the East Midlands Region club website: 'When it comes to important things like bids for grants and funds or mundane things like local authority venue hire, the Clubmark award signals to Local Authorities, leisure and education departments that a sports club is run effectively and efficiently, and meets national standards especially concerning policies and procedures for equality, diversity and child protection and the way all its activities are managed and lead'

Below are a number of documents we have submitted. All of the documents are in the Policy Statements section.

Saluting your opponent

According to the FIE rules (updated June 2007) on the BFA website you should at the end of the bout as well…

Before the beginning of each bout, the two fencers must perform a fencing salute to their opponent, to the Referee and to the spectators. Equally, when the final hit has been scored, the bout has not ended until the two fencers have saluted each other, the Referee and the spectators: to this end, they must remain still while the Referee is making his decision; when he has given his decision, they must again perform a fencing salute and must shake hands with their opponent,
with the unarmed hand.

If either or both of the two fencers refuse to comply with these rules, the Referee will suspend him/them for the remainder of the competition taking place and from the following two FIE competitions in the weapon concerned (cf. t.114, t.119, t.120). The points or titles obtained at the moment of the offence remain acquired.

So you are warned!

Changes to the Bye-Laws of the Club - please note

Following a committee meeting on 7 November, there have been some modifications to the byelaws of the club. I have highlighted them in green. Please have a look - there is not much change but most importantly, all members of the club must have BFA membership at the appropriate level. If you have any questions, please have a word with a member of the committee. There will be more regarding the club's child protection policy shortly - for now, we have agreed to abide by the BFA guidelines
